A deadline to blow up the Frank Erwin Center has finally been set.

What happened

The University of Texas System Board of Regents voted May 4 to add demolishing the Erwin Center and the neighboring Denton A. Cooley Pavilion to its capital improvement plan. The demolition project will begin in June and wrap up by October 2024 at a cost of $25 million.

The details

The May 4 vote marks the start of a long-awaited plan to demolish the Erwin Center and make room for UT’s Dell Medical School to expand. The arena—built in 1977—has sat vacant on the southeast end of UT’s campus for about a year since it was replaced by the Moody Center.
