A new hotel is being proposed for 612 W. Sixth St., Austin, according to permits filed today with the city of Austin.

The project, named Canopy By Hilton, includes a ground-floor restaurant, according to the site plan.

Canopy By Hilton is one of 12 Hilton Worldwide brands. The company owns, manages or leases 4,200 hotels and timeshare properties worldwide.

Canopy is described on its website as the "energizing new hotel in the neighborhood." The first Canopy hotel recently opened in Reykjavik, Iceland.

The company is also building a 195-room hotel in downtown San Antonio, which is expected to be complete in fall 2018. The hotel will integrate the Civil War-era Alamo Fish Market building into its 22-story design.

The applicant for the West Sixth project is listed as Urban Design Group, an Austin-based engineering and design company that is also designing the city's New Central Library and the Independent downtown condominiums.

The property is valued at $2.9 million, according to the Travis Central Appraisal District.

Permits were filed last June for a commercial multifamily project on the same lot, called the West Sixth Micro Project. These permits are listed as expired on the city of Austin website.

The Hilton company has several other hotels in the area, including the Hilton Austin on East Fourth Street and the Hilton Austin Airport.
