The Central Texas Food Bank held a drive-up food distribution events on April 4 at Nelson Field in northeast Austin, 7105 Berkman Drive, Austin, to help families access free food as the community continues to feel the economic impact of restrictions imposed to slow the spread of the coronavirus.

The food bank said 1,515 families received two boxes of food each—one with frozen food such as chicken and orange juice and one with shelf-stable items such as peanut butter and brown rice.

Both boxes weighed approximately 24 pounds each, meaning the food bank distributed more than 70,000 pounds of food during the three-hour event.

Due to safety restrictions, individuals picking up food were not allowed to walk up for deliveries and were encouraged to have only one member of a household pick up items.

The food bank says it will be planning similar events in the future and details will be released as those events are finalized.
