On July 12, Travis County District Attorney José Garza, Travis County Attorney Delia Garza and Travis County District Clerk Velva Price in conjunction with the Travis County Law Library announced they will host an expo on July 23 to help clear criminal records from 260 prequalified citizens.

This is the second expo the city has held this year, the first being June 11, when county officials began the process of eliminating criminal records from 150 people. Clearing criminal records will help these citizens gain better access to jobs, housing and financial resources, according to a press release from the office of the district attorney.

“The expo is a time when people take a positive step from a negative experience,” Price said in a press release. “We look forward to assisting more people on this path.”

At the expo, volunteer attorneys from the Travis County Law Library will be present to help invited residents fill out the necessary paperwork to expunge their records.

In many of these cases, a resident was arrested but not charged or indicted, or they completed a diversion program—a program meant to redirect criminals to a better path, according to a press release. However, even these cases might still show up during a background check without the proper paperwork.

“The Expunction Expo is a great opportunity to help qualified individuals put a difficult time and wrongful arrest or other alleged offense behind them and move forward with dignity and grace,” Garza in a press release. “Our office is proud to continue working with all of the staff and volunteers who generously donate their time to making this event a great success.”
