Travis County moved one step closer to establishing paid family leave for all its employees at a commissioners court meeting Feb. 8.
Commissioners approved a resolution that directs a subcommittee to return to the court in 60 days with recommendations for a policy that guarantees all county workers between six and 12 weeks of paid family leave.
Travis County Judge Andy Brown and Precinct 1 Commissioner Jeffrey Travillion sponsored the resolution.
Travis County employees currently have access to unpaid family and medical leave, but they cannot take extended paid leave following the birth, adoption or foster placement of a child, or to care for a seriously ill family member.
With nearly 5,000 employees, Travis County is one of the largest employers in Central Texas.
