Austin Public Library will begin restricting its Central Library parking garage to library customers until 9:30 a.m., when it will open to the public, on March 12, according to a March 6 memo issued by APL Director Roosevelt Weeks to Mayor Steve Adler and the Austin City Council. Central Library's parking garage is currently open to the public at all times. Since opening in October, Central Library has averaged approximately 100,000 visitors a month, according to the memo. Many customers, however, have voiced concern about a lack of parking downtown, Weeks wrote. By the time the library opens 10 a.m. on weekdays, the garage is typically completely full of non-library customers' cars. To help address this issue, APL will restrict access to the garage to library customers only until 9:30 a.m. On Tuesday, APL posted notices of this change at the entrance of the garage and at the nearby pull station to allow non-library uses to find alternative parking. "We believe making this small change will allow more library customers to park and visit the library," Weeks wrote.
