The city of Austin will begin Monday making improvements to the Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and I-35 intersection, which it identified in September 2015 among the city's top five intersections in need of repair.
Once complete, perhaps the most significant effect on motorists will be the addition of a third lane going straight on the southbound I-35 frontage road through the intersection. A right-turn-only lane will be modified to allow vehicles to both turn right and go straight.
The $215,981 project also entails installing raised crosswalks at the right-turn lane from westbound MLK to the northbound I-35 frontage road, and the southern end of the southbound I-35 frontage road and MLK intersection, according to a city news release.
Traffic will be rerouted beginning Sunday. Right-turn lanes will be closed along MLK at various times throughout construction. However, no major closures will affect the main lanes of the I-35 frontage road, according to the release.
Mid-October is targeted for the completion of the project.
The city aims to improve safety at the intersection by reducing the number of accidents involving either pedestrians or cars as well as efficiency by altering markings on the road and installing pedestrian safety features.
