Jordan and Mikaela Burchill, the married couple behind Austin-based singer-songwriter duo Beth // James, began their story studying jazz music while enrolled at the University of North Texas.

Following graduation, the pair moved to Austin and began working on various projects. But their frequent collaboration as songwriters soon led them to form their own duo, using both their middle names as the band's moniker. After releasing an EP and having a single featured in "BlacKkKlansman," the Oscar-nominated film by Spike Lee, Beth // James are prepping for tour dates in support of their debut album “Get Together.”

In the latest installment of "CI Conversations"—special episodes of the Austin Breakdown podcast featuring discussions with Austin residents about how where they're from inspires what they do—Jordan and Mikaela talk about how the city of Austin has shaped their songwriting and how music has been a strong foundation for their relationship.

Beth // James’ debut album “Get Together” is available on all streaming platforms. Listen until the end of the episode to hear a snippet of their single “Shake It Out.”
