Austin Public Works crews started construction on North Lamar Boulevard for a mill and overlay treatment on March 5.

Mill and overlay is street preventative maintenance, and the process consists of grinding up existing asphalt, removing it and laying new pavement. The street maintenance on North Lamar Boulevard is funded through Austin Public Works’ operations and maintenance budget.

There are two phases of the mill and overlay project. Phase 1 is from Morrow Street to Airport Boulevard, and it will cost a total of $850,000. Construction on Phase 1 of the project will only take place from 7 a.m.-7 p.m. on Saturdays. The time period of this project is over a course of six weekends, so it is expected to be completed by mid-April.

Partial lane closures will go into effect during construction, but the street will remain accessible in both directions at all times. Austin Public Works is encouraging pedestrians and drivers to proceed slowly, with caution of workers and traffic signs while construction is taking place.

Phase 2 of the project is from Koenig Lane to Justin Lane, and it will begin at a later time. Visit www.austintexas.gov/department/street-and-bridge-operations for more information.
