Blood drive cancellations are up due to concerns about coronavirus, prompting a plea for blood and platelet donations that help more than 40 Central Texas hospitals and medical centers.

We Are Blood, the provider to those medical centers in a 10-county area in Central Texas, said donations are down amid coronavirus fears.

“We’ve experienced multiple blood drive cancellations this week due to fears surrounding COVID-19 and are seeing a downturn in blood donations as concern grows in our community,” We Are Blood Vice President of Community Engagement Nick Canedo said. “We want Central Texans to know it is safe to donate blood at our donor centers and mobile drives, and that blood and platelet donations made now will help us meet local patient needs while preparing our community for further impacts from the coronavirus in coming weeks.”

The release said there is no evidence of transfusion-transmitted coronavirus, and blood donor screenings include information about travel and wellness.

Donations may be made at three Austin metro locations. More information is available here.
