Company rents out eco-friendly black storage boxes

Austin's status as the fastest-growing city in America, according to numerous reports, bodes well for a new business specializing in reusable storage boxes.

BungoBox, a Florida-based company that debuted in Austin in June 2012, contends with traditional cardboard storage boxes, which can cost 50 percent more than renting BungoBox's reusable units, General Manager Don Alexander said. The post-consumer plastic boxes are made using 100 percent reusable products, making the black boxes "green," Alexander said.

"One of the main challenges now is making sure we're poised to serve the new growth as we grow," he said.

Business tripled last moving season—March through September, Alexander said, and a new order of boxes is on its way, adding 1,500 BungoBoxes to the 5,000 already available. If sales continue upward, Alexander said the company might consider adding a second location farther south to better serve both sides of Austin.

"We wouldn't want to be in any other market," he said.
