TV crews filmed scenes March 25 for a new pilot called "The Catch," also known as "Smoke and Mirrors," which will star Mireille Enos, according to a Hollywood Reporter article issued earlier this month. Enos previously played a lead role on AMC's "The Killing." Eleven Austin, an apartment complex along I-35 and 11th Street in East Austin, hosted some of the filming for the new TV show. Another ABC show called "American Crime," which currently airs Thursday nights on ABC, also filmed at Eleven Austin and other areas of Austin for its first season. "American Crime," a true crime drama from John Ridley who wrote the award-winning film "12 Years A Slave," tells the story of a young Modesto, Calif., couple attacked in their homes. A filming site scout for "American Crime" picked the East Austin complex after looking for an eclectic apartment setting, said Justin Cislo, Eleven Austin assistant business manager. Such scouts work for Austin's Economic Development Department, which helps assist creative industries succeed in the city. Austin has attempted to make itself a film-friendly city from a permitting standpoint, said Jim Butler, the city's manager of creative industries development. Permit costs are reduced or free, he said, and the approval process is often quick so filming can start on time. There are also incentives for filmmakers who showcase what Austin has to offer, Butler said. Having television shows or movies shoot in Austin is good for the local economy but also boosts Austin's reputation as a place where creativity is encouraged, he said. Eleven Austin gained new residents thanks to the use of local actors and film crews while shooting "American Crime," Cislo said. He said he also helps site scouts find other filming locations throughout Austin, when possible. Cislo said he is open to hosting more filming at Eleven Austin as long as it would not negatively impact residents, he said. More filming at the apartment complex may take place for "American Crime" as the TV show intends to return to Austin to film a second season, according to Cislo.
