When it comes to the boutique shop Sunroom, owner Lucy Jolis said it is all about quality and selection.
Jolis said her focus is to bring independent and up-and-coming brands and designers to the public.
"I'm trying to be the first one to introduce Austin to these up-and-coming designers," Jolis said.
Jolis said opening a boutique shop has been a goal of hers since she was 16. Even while she was working as an executive assistant to the CEO of a boutique hotel company, she created design journals and inspiration boards for her potential boutique store.
The store, which opened in May, has a beach feel with distressed wood displays and tall windows through which natural light pours into the shop. Apparel on Sunroom's shelves includes both men's and women's clothing, jewelry, accessories and home goods.
The store has products from local, national and international designers. Two locally based products carried in the shop include the M.E. Shirley clothing line by Lindsey Creel and jewelry by Charlotte Harrigan.
"I think you can tell it's not another store pushing mass-produced goods," Jolis said. "You can tell there's quality and craftsmanship."
Jolis said she tries to curate a unique selection for her shop by not carrying products available elsewhere in Austin. She also likes to keep the store's offerings new and fresh by ordering small batches of products that are only available for the time they are in stock.
"I think people know now that when I get something in, it's not going to be around for long," Jolis said. "[Designers] do a certain style in a certain fabric, and when it's done, it's done. When I sell out of it, I can't order more of it."
Looking ahead, Jolis said she missed the opportunity to order swimwear when she first opened the store, so she is excited to start carrying such items.
"I'm enjoying it," she said. "I keep looking for new designers and loving the word-of-mouth buzz," Jolis said. "I'm pretty happy with it."
