It was part celebration and part goodbye at Tomball City Hall on Nov. 2.
The city commemorated departing Rep. Wesley Hunt at its council meeting Tuesday by issuing him a proclamation and granting him the key to the city, an honor that Mayor Lori Klein Quinn said had been given only four times before.
"It was an honor of a lifetime to serve the district that I was born and raised in," Hunt said.
The context
Hunt is leaving congress at the end of his term after President Donald Trump nominated him to become the U.S. Ambassador to Saudi Arabia. He gave up his seat when he ran and lost in the Republican primary for U.S. Senate.
Hunt has spent the last four years representing Tomball and parts of west Houston, Jersey Village and Cypress in Congress. His district office is located in Tomball.
Quinn said Hunt's imprint will be felt in Tomball for a long time. She thanked Hunt for bringing in $12 million in various grants to the city during his four-year tenure in congress.
"Our community is very grateful to you and your team," Quinn said.
Also on the agenda
Tomball will host its 2027 Fourth of July celebration and street fest on Saturday, July 3 after the city council approved moving the event. The city is holding its celebration a day early to have maximum attendance with more businesses expected to be open. Other cities in the greater Houston area have moved their celebration to July 3 as well, including Fulshear, League City, Missouri City and Bellaire, according to agenda documents.
The city council for a second time approved rezoning a home at 208 McPhail St. from residential to Old Town zoning designation to allow the homeowners to open a realty office inside it. It was again approved in a split 3-2 vote on second reading.
The council designated Quinn as the city's representative to the general assembly for the Houston-Galveston Area Council. The area council is "the regional organization through which local governments consider issues and cooperate in solving area-wide problems," according to the agency's website. Council member Paul Garcia will be the alternate representative.
