6 health care updates from local hospitals in The Woodlands area

The newly named Melissa Preston Breast Care Center at Medical Plaza 3 was renovated and expanded this year. The hospital’s new Medical Plaza 5 also opened, which includes the TIRR Memorial Hermann Outpatient Rehabilitation, previously at Medical Plaza 2.

In addition, a new Amazon Just Walk Out food and beverage retail storefront will open in June. The hospital also renovated the Women's Services area and the South Tower entrance.

Among the designations and accreditations awarded to the hospital, its Nurse Residency Programs were awarded accreditation with distinction in February, the highest recognition given by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation in Practice Transition Programs.

It was also redesignated as a certified Comprehensive Stroke Center for January 2026-January 2029, according to a news release. This means the hospital is equipped to treat the most challenging stroke cases such as brain aneurysms with 24/7 specialized care, advanced imaging and other capabilities.

In March, the hospital also unveiled AngelEye Health's CameraSystem, allowing families to stay connected to newborns receiving care in the NICU.

The hospital now uses the 7D Flash Navigation System for spine surgery, which allows for more precise spinal care during complex procedures, according to information from St. Luke's Health. The system uses machine-vision technology with nearly 1 million data points, and does not require intraoperative radiation, according to a news release.

The hospital also uses Mako SmartRobotics for knee replacements. Since about 20% of patients report dissatisfaction after conventional surgery, the Mako system uses a 3-D CT scan to provide a highly personalized blueprint of the knee's anatomy, including subtle cysts or bone defects, according to a hospital news release.

The 74-bed hospital includes a dedicated pediatric emergency center with approximately 29 treatment rooms, and it serves as a freestanding pediatric Level IV trauma center. In 2025, Texas Children’s Hospital The Woodlands also became the only hospital in The Woodlands area designated as a Level IV neonatal intensive care unit, increasing access to advanced neonatal services closer to home.

The campus is also recognized for its orthopedics and sports medicine program, with features such as its Motion Analysis and Human Performance Laboratory. Recent initiatives include the implementation of Angel Eye NICU technology, which provides real-time video access to newborns.

The campus is also working to continue expanding access to high-acuity pediatric care, specialty services, neonatal care, sports medicine and surgical care in the region north of Houston, according to information from the hospital.

The hospital now focuses exclusively on inpatient care for patients 18 and older with complex neurodevelopmental conditions. This addresses the gap present for a population that has historically had limited access to these services, according to hospital officials. Programs include the Jump Start Program for young adults 18 and older with severe obesity as well as inpatient care for children with Prader-Willi syndrome and Angelman’s syndrome. The New Directions program provides inpatient care for adults 18 and older with autism and co-occurring medical needs.
