Shenandoah City Council on Wednesday granted an extension for the Woodlofts multi-use apartment complex by a 4-1 vote.

The ordinance states the project will be granted an extension until Aug. 14 to begin construction on the residential and retail project located on just over 5 acres at 201 David Vetter Blvd., Shenandoah. The council spoke with Kevin Kirton, CEO and principal of Buckhead Investment Partners, Inc. and Zane Segal of Zane Segal Projects, one of the developers of the project, who said the project is just about ready to go.

“We’ll start in about 90 days from today,” Segal said. “We’re asking for six months because there are things that can happen to slow us down [and] we don’t know how long the permits will take.”

The Woodlofts will consist of two buildings, including 350 multi-family units, a parking structure and 14,500 feet of retail space.

Council member Byron Bevers cast the dissenting vote.

Ordinance amended to restrict sex offenders living near child safety zones

The council agreed to change the wording of an ordinance regarding the residency of registered sex offenders in the city to include definitions of a child safety zone and to include each offense as a separate violation.

The updated ordinance defines a child safety zone as including “bus stops, private and public playgrounds and public pool including the parking lot.”

Registered sex offenders are unable to live within 1,000 feet of premises with children gather.

Council member Charlie Bradt was the dissenting vote on the amendment, stating he had an issue with the wording of the amendment, particularly with the definition of premises in this instance.

Dave and Busters granted alcohol permit extension

The council approved the extension of an alcohol permit for Dave and Busters, which is anticipating a soft opening at its new location at 8915 Metropark Drive, Shenandoah, either in December or January 2020.

The ordinance, passed in a 4-1 vote by the council, states the extension will keep the alcohol permit active until Feb. 28, 2020.

The location will reportedly occupy 40,000 square feet. Construction is anticipated to begin on a parking garage near the location soon.
