Sugar Land approves $1.68M contract for traffic signals at 4 intersections

Additional work is coming to University Boulevard amid the ongoing widening project.

At a May 20 meeting, Sugar Land City Council approved a nearly $1.68 million construction contract with Florida Traffic Control Devices LLC for four traffic signals along University Boulevard. The project is jointly funded by bonds from the city and Fort Bend County, according to agenda documents.

The signals are part of the nearly $3.2 million initiative to widen University Boulevard, which will add an additional northbound and southbound lane from New Territory Boulevard to just south of Lexington Boulevard, taking the corridor from four to six lanes.

Officials previously said the traffic signal portion of the project aims to add improved signals and signage to several intersections, including:

• Lexington Boulevard
• Hwy. 59
• Telfair/Wescott avenues
• New Territory Boulevard

The county’s funding comes from 2013, 2017 and 2020 voter-approved mobility funds, while the city’s $1.7 million contribution was earmarked in its $90.76 million general obligation bond from November 2019, according to agenda documents.

Moving forward

Traffic signal construction is expected to begin in June with completion anticipated in December, per agenda documents.
