Fall celebrations are underway in the Sugar Land and Missouri City area, and Sugar Land is moving forward with annexation strategies for Greatwood and New Territory. See what's going on around the area this week.

Monday, Oct. 24 — Sugar Land post office renamed

The post office at 3130 Grants Lake Blvd., Sugar Land, was formally renamed the LCpl Garrett W. Gamble, USMC Post Office Building during a ceremony Monday. Gamble, 20, was a Sugar Land native who graduated from Stephen F. Austin High School in 2008 and was killed after stepping on an improvised explosive device while on patrol March 11, 2010. U.S. Rep. Pete Olson, R-Sugar Land, wrote the legislation to get the building legally renamed in July and hosted the event. Gamble’s mother, Michelle Greer, and father, Troy Gamble, spoke at the dedication. Greer said that if her son was asked to name a hero, “he would say, ‘not me.’” Olson presented a plaque to hang in the building as well as a framed photo of Garrett Gamble and a folded flag. “In 20 years, he did some amazing things,” Olson said of Gamble’s life. “We decided we’re going to do everything we can to make sure this town, this region doesn’t forget Garrett.” [g-slider gid="195652" width="100%" height="55%"]

Tuesday, Oct. 25 — Sugar Land resuming annexation budget discussion

Sugar Land City Council will hold a second workshop Tuesday to continue its Oct. 13 discussion of the budget amendment for annexation of the New Territory and Greatwood communities. City departments will present their estimated needs and costs for annexing the areas into the city by the end of December 2017. Sugar Land plans to present the council with a formal ordinance for the annexation on Nov. 1 and hopes the council will vote on Nov. 15. The city must give Greatwood and New Territory residents one year’s notice before the annexation is effective.

Friday, Oct. 28 — Pumpkin Patch Party at First Colony Church of Christ

Preschoolers through fifth-graders and their families are invited to celebrate with food, a Trunk or Treat and activities. First Colony Church of Christ is located at 2140 First Colony Blvd., Sugar Land, and the event runs from 6-8:30 p.m.

Friday, Oct. 28 — Quail Valley Middle School fall festival

Quail Valley Middle School hosts the family-friendly event Friday from 6:30-9:30 p.m. on the campus at 3019 FM 1092, Missouri City. The event includes snacks, games and activities including the Raider cupcake walk, a bean bag toss, a bounce house, face painting, and a silent auction. Admission is $4 for children ages 5-17, $2 for children ages 2-4, $1 for ages 18 or older and free for ages 1 and younger. Tickets are on sale from Oct. 24 to Oct. 28 at the school during grade level lunches. Batches of 10 tickets are available for $5. All proceeds raised will go toward educational materials and activities for the school, according to Fort Bend ISD.
