Sugar Land residents could see an increase to the city’s tax rate.
What residents need to know
At an Aug. 18 meeting, Sugar Land City Council proposed a maximum tax rate of $0.381116 per $100 of taxable value—an increase of more than 6% from the current rate of $0.358827.
The proposed rate is above the city’s no-new-revenue rate of $0.355381, which is the rate that would generate the same property tax revenue as the prior year, Director of Budget ShaLae Steadman said. The rate is below the city’s voter-approval rate of $0.381586.
The impact
If approved, the property bill of a home with a median taxable value of $369,495 would see an annual increase of $96, or $7.98 per month, Steadman said.
Across the city, 50% of households are expected to see an impact of less than $8 a month added to their bills, while 75% will see less than $10 per month.
In case you missed it
The approximately $520 million proposed budget for FY 2026-27—which was presented at a July 21 City Council meeting—includes $343 million in operations spending, Community Impact previously reported.
City officials are also proposing a $612.3 million five-year capital improvement program with $128.8 million proposed for FY 2026-27.
Looking ahead
City Council will host a public hearing for the tax rate on Sept. 8 followed by a Sept. 15 budget and tax rate adoption vote.
