New federal data shows a bump in Spring and Klein residents near the Grand Parkway and increased household incomes in neighborhoods along Hwy. 249 over the last five years.
About the data
The U.S. Census Bureau released new five-year data for 2024 on Jan. 29 as part of its American Communities Survey, or ACS, which estimates population changes across the country between 2020-2024.
ACS results provide a snapshot of more than 40 categories of statistics to explain how local communities have shifted in the past five years, highlighting trends in income, housing, education, demographics and health, according to the bureau's website.
This data compares with the 2019 ACS results, which analyzed communities across the nation between 2015-2019.

Six ZIP codes make up Community Impact's coverage in the Spring-Klein area:

Community Impact also filtered for local trends in the ACS data using Klein ISD's boundaries, which include portions of 77066, 77086 and 77088 in addition to some of the ZIP codes listed above, per the district's website.
Populations across the six ZIP codes trended slightly upward in the five-year timeframe, but the data shows less growth overall compared to other regions of northwest Harris County. ZIP code 77389 had the most estimated population growth since 2019, with approximately 7,000 more residents in the 2024 report.
A closer look
An analysis of racial demographics within Klein ISD's boundaries shows an increase in overall diversity reported in 2024, with a larger percentage of residents identifying as two or more races and Hispanic or Latino.
Educational attainment data for residents age 25 and older within Klein ISD's boundaries remained almost the same between the two five-year snapshots. The newly-released numbers show approximately 6,000 more people having completed a bachelor's degree or higher.
All ZIP codes saw a slight increase in median household income from 2020-2024, which reflects inflation-adjusted dollars. Households closer to Hwy. 249, such as those in 77069, 77070 and 77389, experienced larger bumps in income compared to the rest of the area, the data shows.
While overall household income trended upward, several ZIP codes have a higher uninsured population and a larger percentage of residents living below the federal poverty level. ZIP code 77068 was the only area that improved in both categories, per the new five-year estimates.
