When Lexi Haardt made cupcakes for her son Max to sell during a family yard sale in 2015, she said she had no idea it would turn into her next business venture. “I thought people were just buying them as a courtesy,” Haardt said. “But then they came back.” Haardt began Sugarfoot’s Cupcakes out of her family’s Ponderosa home in March 2015 and quickly began getting requests for custom cakes. “I had never made a cake for anybody outside of the family before,” she said. Haardt said she began learning different baking and decorating techniques by watching online tutorials and attending local classes. “I rarely make the same cake twice,” she said. “Customers send me pictures of what they’re looking for, and we figure out how to make it happen.” Shortly after, she and her husband Josh Riley decided to open their own bakeshop, which they did in April 2018. The bakery offers 15 cupcake flavors on a daily basis, ranging from snickerdoodle and hummingbird to red velvet and tres leches. The shop also offers one to two cookie flavors each day as well as coffee and espresso-based beverages. “We never compromise on the ingredients,” Haardt said. For custom orders, the bakery can make layer cakes, pies, cinnamon rolls, bundt and pound cakes, whoopie pies, scones and muffins, available for pickup or delivery. While Haardt does all of the baking, Riley is in charge of deliveries and works the front counter. Moving forward, the couple said they hope to open a second location in South Houston and begin delivering out of state. Additionally, Haardt said one of her personal goals is to be able to make custom cakes for each of her customer’s life events—from their engagement party to their child’s first birthday. “We don’t do samples because when you buy [a cupcake], we know we’ll see you again,” Haardt said.
