Co-founder Matt Macek said each individual in the U.S. throws away around 80 pounds of clothing per year. A desire to reduce this waste and over a decade of experience working in retail prompted him to open Plaid Fox with his wife Dawn.
The thrift store opened Feb. 15 inspired by similar stores in Finland, and offers a unique rack-rental concept, allowing individuals to sell their gently used fashion while giving shoppers access to a curated selection of clothing and accessories.
How it works
Unlike traditional consignment shops, where sellers receive only a fraction of the resale price, Plaid Fox allows customers to rent a rack for a week and keep up to 65% of their profits. Sellers price their own items, giving them control over their earnings while ensuring a diverse mix of styles, brands and price points for shoppers.
“It's really like having your own boutique for a week,” Matt Macek said. “You can merchandise it and bring what you want and then we sell it for you.”
With 80 different racks in the store, customers can browse a wide variety of styles—from vintage and designer pieces to trendy, everyday fashion. Sellers can also track their sales in real time through an app and restock their booth throughout the week.
Fashion meets sustainability
Dawn Macek said she loves all things vintage, a passion that came from her grandmother.
“Her closet was amazing,” she said. “We went shopping everywhere, from Dillard's to Walmart, from Goodwill to the antique store. I look back at that with fond memories.”
Although Dawn Macek loves thrifting, she said not everyone enjoys the process, and she and Matt wanted to make shopping sustainably less intimidating for individuals in the community.
Plaid Fox makes the process effortless and inviting. Clients have the freedom to arrange racks however they prefer—whether by color, category, or personal style—ensuring a visually appealing and organized shopping experience every time.
A curated shopping experience
By encouraging clothing recycling, Plaid Fox helps reduce waste and promote conscious shopping. The resale shop also eliminates plastic bags in favor of recyclable options and encourages customers to bring their own reusable totes.
For those looking for high-end designer pieces, Plaid Fox also offers a secure case for luxury items like Louis Vuitton bags and Christian Louboutin shoes.
“There's still great quality and great life in that product, but now it's at an affordable price,” Matt Macek said.
In addition to a more organized approach to thrifting, Plaid Fox offers multiple fitting rooms, staff who can give advice on outfits and a studio space.
“We have a studio in the back of the store where you can put your outfit on and snap a selfie, and post it to your friends,” Matt Macek said. “We want people to get excited about their finds and say, ‘Look what I got for this price.’ It's an overall experience. It's not just a normal retail store where you walk in, pick up products and walk out.”
Although Matt and Dawn Macek live in McKinney, they chose Flower Mound for their first location due to the town’s strong sense of community. They said they hope to expand to additional locations in the future, continuing their mission of blending style, sustainability and accessibility.
