For 13 years Leander Veterinary Clinic, located at 1300 S. Bagdad Road, has been a trusted name in pet care, growing alongside the rapidly expanding Leander community. Founded by Dr. Samuel Morehead, the clinic began as a small practice with just one other employee. Today, it stands as a thriving hospital with a team of 35, housed in a state-of-the-art, 8,000-square-foot facility. The upgraded facility includes seven exam rooms, a dedicated surgical suite, and separate feline and canine boarding rooms. This allows the clinic to provide a wider range of services while maintaining its commitment to personalized pet care.

Making a difference, one pet at a time

For the veterinarians at the clinic, the most rewarding moments come from seeing their patients thrive. Dr. Mitchell recalled helping a dog recover from chronic stomach issues and weight loss, later running into the grateful owner at a park.

“The client was thrilled to tell me her pet had been responding to treatment. They both seemed so happy. I remember that moment vividly,” Dr. Mitchell said.

Dr. Foley shared a case where a dog suffering from severe allergies and hair loss transformed after targeted treatment.

“One of the most rewarding parts of being a veterinarian is treating a problem that not only helps the animal, but helps the animal and their human bond,” Dr. Foley said.

For Dr. Morehead, telling relieved owners their puppy, who had been in an accident, was perfectly fine reinforced the deep impact of compassionate veterinary care.

“One of my favorite things is helping people's pets feel better and getting to see the relief in people's eyes when they find out their pet is going to be ok,” Dr. Morehead said.

Community involvement

In addition to serving its clients, Leander Veterinary Clinic actively engages with the local community. They collaborate with the City of Leander to host biannual low-cost vaccination clinics, ensuring that pets throughout the area receive essential immunizations. These events, structured as convenient drive-thru clinics, help pet owners access affordable preventive care.

“We believe that all animals should be safe and healthy,” marketing manager Treasure Hatch said. “The City of Leander has partnered with us to help us vaccinate pets safely, quickly and conveniently at a discounted cost.”

A commitment to independent care

What sets Leander Veterinary Clinic apart is its steadfast commitment to remaining privately owned.

“In a private practice, doctors are able to practice medicine the way they see fit, without corporate influence,” Hatch said. “A good example would be that Central Texas is a hot spot for animal allergies, so different protocols and treatments for our area are important in order to be able to address each pet and their different needs. Knowing that the [veterinary staff] clients have put their trust in to care for their pets are members of their own community puts them at ease”

Educating pet owners and enhancing the experience

Beyond medical treatment, the clinic prioritizes education, ensuring that pet owners feel informed and confident in their decisions. From explaining the importance of heartworm prevention in Texas to offering guidance on managing pet allergies, the team takes time to answer questions and discuss care plans.

“[Community and client] education is one of our passion projects,” Hatch said. “We make sure to take time with each client during their visit to answer any questions and to introduce different treatments that will help their pet.”

This approach helps foster a welcoming experience for both pets and their owners. By treating every pet as family, the clinic creates an atmosphere of trust and reassurance.

Looking ahead

Rather than focusing on expansion through additional locations, Leander Veterinary Clinic remains committed to enhancing the quality of care at its existing facility.

“Our long-term vision is to continue to grow with the community and to consistently educate our employees and doctors on any new treatments and protocols that are out there. That way, we can share those with our clients and empower them with the knowledge to ensure their furry family members are healthy and happy for years to come” Hatch said.

To further support pet owners, the clinic offers monthly promotions and a popular rewards program, allowing clients to earn points for discounts on future visits. These initiatives help make high-quality veterinary care more accessible and affordable.

As Leander continues to grow, so does the clinic’s dedication to providing compassionate, community-centered care. Whether through cutting-edge medical treatments, client education or outreach programs, Leander Veterinary Clinic remains a steadfast advocate for the health and wellbeing of pets in the region.
