This September, FYZICAL Therapy & Balance Center in Stone Oak is raising awareness about the importance of fall prevention through its annual Fight the Fall campaign.
Falls are the leading cause of injury-related deaths and serious health problems in the U.S. Franchisee Lauren Byrd said every year, 3 million individuals visit the emergency room due to a fall. Of those 3 million individuals, about 1 million are older adults. In addition, 98% of hip fractures are due to a fall.
“This campaign highlights the importance of everything that can be done to prevent falls in all people,” Byrd said.
While many falls involve older adults, people of all ages can experience falls due to various factors, such as vertigo, medications or changes in vision.
“There are a lot of medical conditions, not just age, that are a factor when it comes to somebody's gait being impaired and individuals losing their balance,” Byrd said.
The team at FYZICAL Therapy & Balance Center in Stone Oak believe balance is crucial to an individual’s wellness and overall quality of life. Patients at the clinic focus on core strength, gait training and stability.
One of the clinic’s most unique features is its safety overhead support system, a ceiling-mounted rail with a harness that allows patients to practice walking and balance exercises without the fear of falling. This innovative system helps patients gain confidence as they work through their therapy.
“I think one of the biggest things we do is instill confidence in people that they can walk and ambulate safely,” Byrd said. “Let's say maybe they're on a walker, or they're in a wheelchair, or they are recovering from a knee replacement, but they're not steady on their feet. ... When they know they're not going to fall, they can do what the physical therapist is asking them to do, and they’re able to get stronger.”
In addition to using the safety overhead support system, the clinic’s therapists also take patients outside the clinic to practice walking on uneven surfaces. This hands-on approach ensures that patients are well-prepared to navigate their daily lives safely and confidently.
The team at FYZICAL Therapy & Balance Center is also a key part of what makes the clinic special. With experienced therapists like Dr. Jonathan Kirkwood, an orthopedic clinical specialist, and Dr. Karla Sanabia, a pelvic floor therapy expert, patients receive personalized, one-on-one care. This individualized approach allows therapists to fully understand each patient’s unique needs and lifestyle, ensuring that treatment plans are tailored to achieve the best possible outcomes.
As the clinic continues to grow, its commitment to personalized, comprehensive care remains at the forefront. The Fight the Fall campaign is just one example of how FYZICAL Therapy & Balance Center is making a difference in the lives of its patients, helping them stay strong, balanced and confident at any age.
