Sponsored by: MyEyeDr.

Every MyEyeDr. practice is equipped with the latest in vision care technology, staffed with compassionate, knowledgeable optometrists, eyewear consultants and a wide selection of quality eyewear and specialty products, and the MyEyeDr. Lewisville location is no exception.

In this Q&A, Dr. Brenda Floyd-Brochetti, one of the optometrists at the MyEyeDr. Lewisville location, provides insight into her eye care philosophy and experience with MyEyeDr.

Why did you choose to pursue a career in eye health?

Dr. Floyd-Brochetti: Well, the work is fascinating and it's very valuable. When I was in school, I wanted to either be a scientist or an optometrist. I realized I have the best of both worlds. I frequently become a scientist as I look to find what's happening with a patient’s eye health. I love helping people see their best. The MyEyeDr. purpose is to help people live their best lives, and that fits in perfectly with my approach for patient care.

Why did you choose to work at MyEyeDr?

Dr. Floyd-Brochetti: Originally, I was in private practice and that was nice, but there was so much paperwork and administrative details and it became cumbersome at times. MyEyeDr. has a great team that takes care of much of that so I can concentrate more on helping patients which is what I love most. They provide me with the best equipment, the latest technology, a wider selection of frames for my patients and an excellent ability to care for each patient.

Why is eye health so important?

Dr. Floyd-Brochetti: To see well sure does help make life easier. Healthy eyes are very necessary for good vision, and healthy eyes can relate to a healthy body. Oftentimes diabetes, blood pressure issues, autoimmune disease and other health problems can be picked up during an eye exam. When it comes to eye disease, early detection is so important for achieving the best outcome.

What are the essential steps to ensuring healthy vision at every age?

Dr. Floyd-Brochetti: A routine eye exam is important to help with early detection and problems. Many problems can also begin at an early age, so parents should have their children's eyes tested.

Glasses and contact lens wearers especially need yearly checkups to make sure their eyes are not changing and to see if their eyewear needs to be upgraded. For seniors, it's important to check for cataracts and macular degeneration, as well as many other possible concerns.

What are the signs and risk factors of eye disease and how can you prevent them?

Dr Floyd-Brochetti: These factors include family history, age, diabetes, high blood pressure, smoking, and blurred vision that's not completely correctable with glasses. Signs of eye disorders include but are not limited to, blurred vision, distance and near, red eyes, discharge from the eyes, eye pain, distorted vision, or seeing flashes of light and glare driving at night. The greatest risk factor for eye disease is age, however, blurred vision can occur at any age. Also, if you use computers for long, prolonged times during the day, follow the 20-20-20 rule: After each 20 minutes of computer work, look out about 20 feet away for 20 seconds before coming back to the computer.

With the summer months upon us, we often remember to protect our skin but not our eyes. What are your tips for how to protect our eyes from sun damage?

Dr. Floyd-Brochetti: I would recommend wearing your sunglasses year-round, especially if you're outside a lot, and even so, wear sunglasses with 99% to 100%, UVA and UVB protection to the eyes to prevent damage to the eyes and prevent early cataract formation as well as UV-related macular degeneration.

Even if you're outside for brief periods of time, it all adds up, so protection against the sun's radiation can be very important. Also, quality sunglasses can help reduce skin cancer for the delicate tissues around the eyes. Sunglasses should also be used during the winter as well as the sun's effects are still there.

Can you tell me a bit more about the MyEyeDr experience?

Dr. Floyd-Brochetti: At MyEyeDr., we realize that nothing is more important than how patients see our world. MyEyeDr. uses the most innovative technology, skilled eye doctors and localized services and the practices of a far-reaching effort to improve vision care.

We're offering full service eye care throughout the community to patients of all ages, and we strive to provide our patients with the best in class service, while also styling them in the latest selection of glasses, sunglasses and contact lenses to fit the budget and lifestyle. Not only that, but we accept all insurances and provide affordable options for all patients. I invite everybody to come and see us at MyEyeDr. in Lewisville at 2410 South Stemmons Freeway to observe the MyEyeDr. difference, and I'm looking forward to seeing you.
