Dr. Tara K. Ortiz began treating urological conditions at the Ascension Seton Dripping Springs Health Center in May. She spoke with Community Impact to discuss her practice, patient education and access to care.
Can you explain some common urological conditions that you treat?
Kidney stones, enlarged prostate, male and female urinary incontinence, overactive bladder, prostate cancer, kidney cancer, bladder cancer, recurrent urinary tract infections, erectile dysfunction and low testosterone.
What inspired you to specialize in urology?
I value the opportunity to treat a diverse range of urological conditions in both men and women. The therapies we offer are designed to significantly improve our patients' quality of life. Our specialty provides a wide range of management options, from lifestyle modifications and dietary changes to minimally invasive procedures, medications and complex surgeries. Above all, I find building long-term relationships with patients to be the most rewarding aspect of my practice.
How do you approach patient education regarding urological health?
I view my role as that of a coach, dedicated to providing patients with the essential information they need to make the most informed decisions for their well-being. I strive to tailor my approach to each individual's case, goals and social context, with a focus on achieving a healthy baseline and prioritizing preventative care. My goal is to empower patients to be active participants in their own health journey through a collaborative and knowledge-based approach to care.
How is it significant for Dripping Springs to have access to specialized urology care?
Before my arrival at the Ascension Seton Dripping Springs Health Center, the community and surrounding areas, including Wimberly, Johnson City, Henly, Driftwood and Spicewood, lacked a full-time urologist. I am proud to be here and serve the patients of Dripping Springs and its neighboring communities.
What sets your practice apart from other urology providers in the region?
I take a very patient-centered, holistic approach to practicing urology. I treat a wide range of conditions and I am open to learning new things from my patients. I am committed to helping patients find answers they need, so they may live a healthier life.
Is there anything else you’d like our readers to know?
As a urologist, I always recommend having a consultation with a specialist if an individual has concerns with urological health. It’s important to be evaluated quickly for more serious issues like passing a kidney stone, blood in the urine, an elevated PSA (a screening test for prostate cancer) or a suspected kidney tumor seen on imaging. Beyond urgent medical reasons, a urologist can also help determine the best treatments for issues impacting an individual's daily quality of life.
