South Congress Avenue-area visitors in Austin can expect new paid parking, regulations

The city of Austin has installed new signs outlining new paid parking zones around South Congress Avenue to address long-standing parking issues within the area, according to an update from the Austin Transportation Department.

This strategy is anticipated to create more parking space turnover in a busy area referred to by the city as the South Congress Parking and Transportation Management District, which includes a mix of retail, entertainment, commercial, medical, educational, civic and residential uses.

Various signs placed within the neighboring residential area now clearly communicate daytime hours and state parking available to those with a permit or within designated pay-to-park zones.

All the revenue from the paid parking will be used toward future mobility improvements in the area, according to ATD.

What you should know

Signs in the South Congress Avenue area will guide visitors on which parking zone they are in. Some zones will be designated exclusively for paid visitor parking, while others will be shared with residents and/or business employees.

The district will be completely digital. Drivers wishing to park in the area can download the Park ATX app or text “parking” to 30843 and follow prompts to start a parking session.

Hours for paid parking on South Congress Ave:

• Monday to Saturday: 8 a.m.-midnight
• Sunday: 1 p.m.-midnight

Hours for paid parking on residential streets:

• Monday to Saturday: 8 a.m.-6 p.m.
• Sunday: 1-6 p.m.
