Project details
High-efficiency LED fixtures were installed, replacing outdated non-LED lights. Construction also included new light poles and underground electrical infrastructure that will improve reliability and ensure optimal lighting coverage across all fields.
The new lighting system provides brighter illumination while reducing energy consumption and maintenance costs, which allows for extended play hours and a safer experience for athletes and spectators, Christensen said in an email to Community Impact.
“The LED lights provide better illumination than the old non-LED fixtures, enhancing safety for players, referees and spectators by reducing dark spots on the field. Additionally, the project supports sustainability efforts by lowering energy consumption and reducing maintenance costs, thanks to the longer lifespan of LEDs,” Christensen said.
The cost
Construction on the $1.8M project—which began Dec. 17—was funded in partnership with the Schertz Economic Development Corporation to advance “key quality of life” projects in the city and the parks and recreation department’s fiscal year 2023-24 budget, Christensen said.
The impact
The upgraded lighting system positions the complex as a state-of-the-art facility that supports the growth of soccer and other sports in Schertz, Christensen said.
“This upgrade makes the complex a more attractive venue for tournaments and community events, benefiting athletes, families and the community as a whole,” Christensen said.
