Additional Google Fiber lines will bring high-speed internet to Cibolo. City Council approved the authorization of a Right-of-Way License Agreement between the city and Google Fiber on Oct. 29.

The overview

The license agreement between the city and Google Fiber would allow the installation, maintenance and operation of a fiber optic network in the public rights-of-way, according to an Oct. 30 news release.

Jason Bone, head of metro tech ops for the region, said Google Fiber has done work in the cities of San Antonio, Windcrest and Leon Valley.

“We feel like this brings a great benefit to the city of Cibolo,” he said. “It is in high demand. High speed, reliable, fair open-access internet is kind of necessary in today's world.”

What they’re saying

Council member Dick Hetzel asked about the construction process, and how damage to older areas of the city will be mitigated from digging.

Bone explained that there are several different methods to construction, but no matter the method, the construction areas will be restored after the fiber optic lines are installed.

“We do restore the areas that we disturb back to the condition that it was before,” Bone said.

The cables will be anywhere between 1 to 3 feet down.

“The City of Cibolo is honored to have been selected by Google Fiber as the first city in our region to roll out their high-speed internet service,” Cibolo Mayor Mark Allen said in the release. “They could have selected many other cities in our area to expand their services to, but they selected Cibolo because of our growth, exciting business environment, and incredible residents.”

Moving forward

Google Fiber expects to begin construction in the beginning of 2026 with service becoming available to Cibolo customers as network segments are completed in their neighborhood.

According to the news release, Cibolo will receive Google Fiber’s high-speed, high-bandwidth internet service, offering 1, 2, 5 and 8 gigabyte service to residents and small businesses without data caps, equipment fees or annual contracts. Cibolo residents can sign up for availability updates at fiber.google.com.
