Alongside interior renovations, draining improvements to holes eight and nine at the course were approved by Universal City City Council on Jan. 16.
The details
In July, city officials engaged in a professional service contract with Villa Park Architects for the design, bid and project management of the flooring, restroom renovations and interior finishes at the Olympia Hills Golf Course and Event Center.
On Jan. 16, a bid in the amount of $234,979 was awarded to Joeris General Contractors for construction work. City Manager Kim Turner said these funds come from allocations of the venue tax fund in the fiscal year 2023-24 budget. When the budget was approved, a total of $550,000 was allocated for renovations and other projects at the golf course.
The remaining funds—following the renovations—are expected to be used for parking lot upgrades, which are estimated to cost around $225,000, Turner said. The parking lot project is in the design phase.
Turner said the renovation project is set to begin in March and will take around six weeks to complete. During the project time, the facility will remain open.
More details
During the Jan. 16 meeting, City Council also approved a bid of $614,999 for drainage improvements at two of the holes at the golf course. This project is funded through the stormwater capital improvements section of the FY 2023-24 budget.
According to City Council documents, the corrugated storm drainage pipe has deteriorated and collapsed, causing erosion of the green, which is a safety issue for the golf course.
Public Works Director Randy Luensmann said the project began Feb. 1 and will take around six months to complete. As of Feb. 6, both holes were reduced to a par three, and temporary tee boxes were installed.
Turner said since this project came in under budget, council will have the opportunity to look at funding other drainage projects or move the additional funds back to the venue tax fund when the golf course project is completed.
