In March, a memorandum of understanding was signed between Wayland Baptist University and Bexar County for the university to house the satellite office space and utilities at no cost to the county.
Dignitaries and speakers during the opening event included Keith Wilson and Calvin Henry from the military and veterans services department; Live Oak City Manager Glen Martel; Albert Uresti, Bexar County tax assessor-collector; Tommy Calvert, Bexar County Precinct 4 commissioner; Wayland Baptist University Dean Glenn Simmons; and Toro Martinez, a representative from U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar's office.
The office will provide local assistance to veterans or military personnel active or transitioning, and their families.
Assistance at the satellite office includes:
- Comprehensive benefits counseling
- U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs claims/appeals development and submission assistance
- Information on pension and survivor benefits
- VA health care enrollment assistance
- Employment and transition assistance for military and family members
- Referrals for resources in the community
