The background
TxDOT is expanding 20 miles of I-35 from N. Walters Street to FM 1103—a project that will stretch across Bexar, Comal and Guadalupe County once completed. The I-35 NEX Program is broken up into the Central, South and North Projects. Once completed, two elevated structures will be constructed to carry two general purpose lanes and one HOV lane in each direction, according to the TxDOT website.
According to TxDOT, the I-35 NEX Program will:
- Improve safety and mobility
- Address an increase in traffic growth on I-35
- Reduce travel time
- Serve regional traffic
- Maintain existing roadbeds in place
Currently, work is being completed on the I-35 NEX Central project, which began in June 2022 and is slated to be completed in late 2027. Construction on the I-35 NEX South Phase 1 project began in the summer of 2024, and is expected to be completed in late 2028, according to TxDOT.
