San Antonio City Council on June 6 awarded a $4.3 million contract to E-Z Bel Construction for the city’s planned extension of Sonterra Boulevard near Stone Oak.

What’s happening?

City officials said that later this summer they will begin an initiative involving the extension Sonterra Boulevard to the existing intersection of Gold Canyon Road and Loop 1604.

Sonterra Boulevard currently dead-ends at an undeveloped tract behind a retail area that includes Dogtopia, Firstmark Credit Union and O’Krent Floors.

The city’s voter-approved 2022 bond contains $6 million to support the Sonterra Boulevard extension.

Local officials said extending Sonterra Boulevard to Loop 1604 will help to increase mobility for motorists needing to access neighborhood homes or businesses.

City representatives also said the road extension can help to alleviate traffic congestion that tends to build up around service times at the adjacent Community Bible Church.

Diving in deeper

The project will include a new roundabout intersection, curbs, storm drains, lighting, a water quality pond, driveway approaches, and water and power utility relocations.

Also, the city’s 2020 budget allocated $450,000 toward the project. Local officials added that the 2022 bond and the city’s current five-year capital improvements program both have enough money to fund the rest of the project, which is scheduled for completion in summer 2025.
