Work crews leading the expansion and improvement of Loop 1604 in north central San Antonio will close segments of the freeway in each direction nightly now through March 1.

The background

Texas Department of Transportation officials said project contractors will close the main westbound lanes of Loop 1604 from the Blanco Road exit ramp to the I-10 interchange, and the eastbound main lanes from the Bitters Road exit ramp to the Stone Oak Parkway entrance ramp from 9 p.m.-5 a.m. daily through March 1. This series of closures began Feb. 25.

According to TxDOT representatives, the closure will permit work crews to set barriers and do striping in preparation for a traffic switch.

TxDOT officials said, during these nightly closures, motorists traveling westbound on Loop 1604 will exit via the Blanco Road exit ramp and continue on the westbound frontage road through the intersections of Blanco Road, Huebner Road, Bitters Road, NW Military Highway, Vance Jackson Road and the I-10 interchange. Traffic can re-enter the main westbound Loop 1604 lanes via the entrance ramp west of I-10.

Eastbound motorists will use the Bitters Road exit ramp and continue on the eastbound frontage road through the intersections of Bitters, Huebner, Blanco and Stone Oak, then re-enter the eastbound main lanes via the entrance ramp east of Stone Oak Parkway.

TxDOT representatives urged motorists to beware alternating weekday and weekend closures and detours that project contractors will conduct at I-10 and Loop 1604 and other parts of Loop 1604 that are undergoing expansion work between Stone Oak Parkway and Bandera Road.

TxDOT on Feb. 27 announced full closures of the Kyle Seale Parkway entrance ramp and the eastbound exit ramp to Babcock Road from 9 p.m. Feb. 28 through summer 2024. A temporary entrance ramp at Kyle Seale will be open for the time being.

Additionally, contractors will close southbound Blanco Road lanes from the eastbound Loop 1604 (EB) frontage road to Talavera Parkway from 9 p.m.-5 a.m. daily Feb. 29 through March 2 to allow San Antonio Water System crews to do water line work.
