Methodist Hospital Stone Oak announced Sept. 7 that Judy Tan Shumway has been appointed as chief medical officer. Her new duties will be effective Sept. 11.

Shumway was most recently senior vice president of clinical services with University Health where she provided oversight of quality, patient safety, accreditation and regulatory compliance, according to a news release. She also led a focus on mortality rate reduction.

Shumway previously served as the west regional medical director for TeamHealth where she led hospitalist medicine practices in seven locations across Texas. She provided operational leadership for multiple medical directors with oversight of performance outcomes in hospital services and performance improvement plans, the release states.

While serving as regional medical director and operations director for the San Antonio region, Shumway directed clinical operations for eight hospital medicine practices within Methodist Healthcare System, Baptist Health System and Southwest General Hospital, including a subspecialty neurology hospitalist group, the release states.

Shumway held several medical director positions throughout Texas since 2009, beginning as practice group medical director at Methodist Hospital Stone Oak. She has been named top hospitalist by American College of Physicians, and Hospitalist of the Year by IPC The Hospitalist Co. She is also a member of the Institute of Healthcare Improvement and completed an executive coaching certification at the Hudson Institute of Coaching, the release states.



Shumway earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from the University of Maryland in College Park and a master’s degree in public health from the George Washington University in Washington, D.C. She received a doctorate in osteopathic medicine from Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona, California.
