On Aug. 5, The Bexar County Commissioners Court approved a proposal to set the 2025-26 ad valorem property tax rate for the Bexar County Hospital District, otherwise known as University Health, in support of its operating and debt service outlook for fiscal year 2025-26.

The gist

According to county documents, the proposed tax rate of $0.276236 per $100 property valuation reflects legislative changes at both the state and federal levels. Additionally, the increased tax rate will also support the ongoing development of University Health’s two new community hospitals, which are scheduled to open in early 2027, as well as a $71 million purchase of the 45.121-acre Christus Health Medical Center Hospital Campus.

The acquisition of the Christus Health campus will allow University Health to alleviate overcrowding and improve patient flow at University Hospital. The new campus will also allow University Health to house certain ambulatory services at the new campus, which will enhance access. According to county documents, funding for the Christus hospital campus has already been secured and the purchase will not impact the current tax rate.

The vote to approve the proposal is a prerequisite for the adoption of the new tax rate, and allows the commissioners court to set a public hearing and a vote on the tax rate.

Looking ahead

The Bexar County Commissioners Court will hold a public hearing followed by a vote on the new tax rate at 9:30 a.m. Sept. 9.
