During its July 14 meeting, the San Antonio ISD board of trustees approved a resolution to sell 2.29 acres to Bexar County for the construction of the Missions ballpark.

The gist

SAISD’s resolution came after negotiations between the district, the County, the City of San Antonio, developers, Weston Urban, and Missions ownership, Designated Bidders. The sale will include monetary compensation and six benefits for SAISD. SAISD first agreed to a memorandum of understanding with Bexar County in December 2024.

SAISD benefits include:
  • The appointment of a district designee to the San Antonio Housing Trust and Foundation
  • The county’s commitment to adopt by Dec. 31, 2025, a five-year plan of measurable affordable housing goals to be developed in consultation with SAISD
  • The conveyance of land to SAISD for the construction of the Advanced Learning Academy
  • The conveyance of land to SAISD for the new parking garage near Fox Tech campus, including the construction, use and eventual ownership of the new parking garage
  • Amendment to the Quincy Street parking garage lease to alleviate parking fees and to give SAISD more operational control of the garage
  • Access and use of the new multi-purpose facility and ballpark for SAISD students and educational endeavors

What else?

The plan to build a new $160 million stadium in downtown San Antonio for the Missions first arose after Nelson W. Wolff Stadium received the lowest rating of all Minor League Baseball stadiums. The new owners, Designated Bidders, were required to provide ballpark facilities that meet a certain criteria and the level of investment required to update Wolff Stadium did not make feasible economic sense.

The new stadium will be able to accommodate 7,500 people and will be built alongside four phases of private development by developers, Weston Urban. It’s estimated the first two phases will create $575 million in taxable value. The Missions Stadium project is projected to generate $1 billion in taxable value after all the phases have been completed.
