As part of the Terminal Development Program, Jesus Saenz, director of airports for the city of San Antonio, presented a briefing on a series of packages designed to showcase local culture at the San Antonio International Airport during the City Council special session Nov. 7.

The overview

During the presentation, Saenz unveiled two food and beverage packages with roughly 70% composed of local concepts. Saenz said these packages offer a unique experience for visitors and optimize nonairline revenue opportunities.

The first food and beverage package includes:
  • Charley’s Cheesesteaks in Terminal B
  • Alamo Alehouse in Terminal B
  • Pronto in Terminal B
  • Sbarros Pizza in Terminal B
  • La Gloria in Terminal A
  • A food court area in Terminal A
  • La Fruteria in Terminal A
  • Marcy’s Travel Center in the pre-security area of Terminal A
Though Saenz presented the first package, he said the SA Airport Evaluation Committee recommended a rebidding process.

The second food and beverage package includes:
  • Horseshoe Tequila Bar & satellite bar in Terminal A
  • Panda Express in Terminal A
  • TRE Pizzeria in Terminal A
  • Freight Fried Chicken in Terminal A
  • Pharm Table in Terminal A
  • Dunkin' in Terminal B
  • Southerleigh Fine Food and Brewery in Terminal B
According to city officials, the food and beverage packages would bring in a minimum annual guarantee of $2 million with projected revenues over a 10-year period of $24.8 million.

Also of note

Additionally, SA Airport officials recommended awarding Paradies Lagardere the retail package, which showcases approximately 70% local concepts.

Saenz said Paradies Lagardere's retail package would highlight local brands and celebrate San Antonio’s military culture.

Retail package includes:
  • Military City USA in Terminal B
  • Feliz Modern in Terminal B
  • iStore Express in Terminal B
  • Prickly Pear Provisions between terminals
  • 210 Exchange in Terminal A
  • Univision in Terminal A
  • Self-service kiosks in Terminal A
Saenz said Paradies Lagardere also created an avenue within the package for passengers to support the military.

“Paradies [Lagardere] is making a significant impact in supporting our military with the 'Treat Our Troops' program, enabling guests to support men and women with essentials and small luxuries. Passengers can purchase items within the store, and [the store] will donate it to the local USO,” Saenz said.

According to city officials, the retail package will bring in a minimum annual guaranteed revenue of $2.67 million and projected revenues over a 10-year period of $29.6 million.

Quote of note

Mayor Ron Nirenberg said the proposed packages do a great job of highlighting local culture.

“I think this [plan] presents in a way that showcases local brands that make people want to visit and explore more,” Nirenberg said.
