San Antonio City Council voted on June 2 to approve a contract with international architecture and design firm Corgan to design a planned third terminal at the San Antonio International Airport.

Corgan and its project partners, including local Lake|Flato Architects and airport/transportation planners from the firm Kimley-Horn, will develop a program definition manual to lay the groundwork for the Terminal C facility, city officials said.

Community Impact Newspaper previously reported on the city’s $2 billion long-range plan to improve and expand the North Side airport complex, including more gates and concession spaces, a unified passenger area and a longer runway.

According to a news release, Corgan and their design partners will provide:

  • architectural concept design for key components of the terminal development program that will allow environmental reviews to begin immediately;

  • updated cost estimates for those design components; and

  • recommendations on project phasing and procurement strategies.

Project representatives said the Terminal C design and supporting airport plans will help to ensure the airport offers a fuller San Antonio look and feel to passengers and visitors. City officials said development of Terminal C is projected to take place between 2027 and 2030.

“The San Antonio region has a rich history and diverse culture, and the airport’s passengers deserve a quality experience that embraces this sense of place. We will be creating memorable, positive brand equity while enhancing the functionality and operations,” Corgan Principal John Trupiano said in a statement.

San Antonio Airport System Director Jesus Saenz said he and his colleagues remain focused on planning for continued growth at the airport and within the city’s population.

“[Corgan] is committed to assisting us in making important decisions now that will allow us to stay on schedule and budget throughout the next five years,” Saenz said in a statement.

According to company officials, Corgan has more than 80 years of architectural and design experience on aviation, commercial, health care and data center developments. Corgan designed a terminal expansion at Houston’s William P. Hobby Airport and a terminal modernization program at Dallas Love Field Airport.

“We will develop a comprehensive, innovative, data-driven plan and related functional areas in the terminal complex, including the airfield, support facilities, landside and ground access,” Trupiano said about the San Antonio airport project.
