A family-friendly art in the park event, a back-to-school celebration, a collectibles expo and pet-friendly activities are among happenings scheduled around San Antonio during the second full weekend of August.

Aug. 11

Community members are invited to Art in the Park at Hemisfair. Local artist Albert Gonzales from Trebla Art will hosting a workshop with a custom art piece and bringing prints of the art piece for people to color. Additionally, Los Angeles singer-songwriter Ivanna Danforth will perform.

Aug. 12

Churchill High School athletics fans and parents are invited to meet the Chargers. The event will include a chance to meet 2023-24 varsity teams, see performances by dance and cheer teams, and welcome incoming freshman families.

Eckman’s Card, Comic and Toy Show will have several vendors offering a variety of sports and nonsports cards and memorabilia, comic books, graphic novels, toys, and other collectibles.

San Antonio Animal Care Services will provide free core canine and feline vaccinations and registered microchips for San Antonio pet owners. Residents must present a picture ID and current address as well as ensuring their pets are on a leash with a properly fitting collar or in an appropriate carrier. Free vaccinations and microchips are on a first-come, first-served basis for the first 100 pets only.

Aug. 13

Carlos Rosales-Silva, a New York-based artist and educator, will engage San Antonio Museum of Art visitors and let them witness his work in progress on a large-scale, site-specific mural in the museum’s Great Hall as part of the launch of the Gateway Series. The series is ongoing project that will enlist contemporary artists to activate the space. Rosales-Silva will be on-site through Aug. 21, and the artwork will remain on display through Sept. 14.

Visitors enjoying brunch and music at Grille 254 at La Cantera Resort & Spa are invited to bring a nonperishable food item for donation to the San Antonio Food Bank. Donors will get a complimentary draft beer. Additionally, Tito’s Vodka is donating $1 for every bloody mary served during Sunday brunch during August at Grille 254 for up to $2,500. San Antonio Youth Ballet will present a fundraiser, Ballet Brunch and Ball, featuring various dining options, a silent auction, a formal presentation about SAYB's upcoming season, a dance performance and a ball. VIP ticketholders will have a social hour option. This event is open to all ages, and hopeful young dancers are not only welcome, but encouraged.
