San Antonio nonprofit SAY Si on Dec. 10 opened its newest exhibit, “We Are Now,” which features artwork from several local high school students, including Johnson High School freshman Emily Schammel.

Her digital art piece “Women, Life, Freedom” was selected to be part of the “We Are Now” exhibit. According to a North East ISD news release, Schammel’s piece was inspired by the recent outbreak of protests in Iran.

Schammel is one of two freshmen in the level two digital drawing course at Johnson. She took art honors in middle school, a high school fine arts credit and prerequisite toward upper-level art classes, the release said.

Schammel’s teacher, Bianca Pitman, said she is excited to see the student flourish.

“[Schammel] is extremely talented and dedicated to practicing new skills and techniques. She spent so much time working on hand studies, light studies, representing different cultures and considering her composition,” Pitman said in a statement.

The "We Are Now" exhibit may be viewed by the public through February at 1310 S. Brazos St. Some of the art pieces are available for sale, representatives said.
