Several transportation projects in New Braunfels are moving forward after the Alamo Area Metropolitan Planning Organization, or AAMPO, approved millions of dollars in funding for new and existing projects.

The city of New Braunfels and the Texas Department of Transportation, or TxDOT, were awarded funding through AAMPO’s fiscal year 2027-30 Transportation Improvement Program. With the latest approvals, AAMPO’s total investment in New Braunfels road construction projects is expected to reach approximately $146 million, according to a news release.

The details

Seven projects in New Braunfels received funding through the program, three of which are existing projects requiring additional funds to address rising construction costs, the release states.

Existing projects include:
  • $7.5 million in additional funding for the city’s $22 million Barbarosa Road and Saur Lane Improvement Project, increasing the federal contribution to $17.6 million
  • $8.3 million in additional funding for TxDOT’s FM 725 Improvement Project
  • $14.3 million in additional funding for TxDOT’s I-35 at the Solms Interchange Improvement Project
The AAMPO Transportation Policy Board also approved approximately $56.25 million for new local transportation projects focused on multimodal mobility improvements, the release states.

Newly approved projects include:
  • $4.27 million for the city’s Citywide Pedestrian Improvements Project, which will add sidewalks along North Peach, North Plum and North Grape avenues, sidewalks along Avery Parkway near Clear Springs Elementary School and continued improvements to the shared-use path on Hanz Drive
  • $17.87 million for the West San Antonio Street and Spur Street improvement project between Hidalgo Avenue and Walnut Avenue, adding turn lanes, parking lanes, sidewalks, intersection upgrades, drainage improvements and right-of-way enhancements
  • $450,000 for the city’s Signal Timing Optimization Project
  • $33.66 million for TxDOT’s I-35 at Loop 337 and Rueckle Road interchange improvement project, which will add intersection lanes and new I-35 access turnaround lanes

What they’re saying

The funds symbolize a significant investment in the city’s future, Garry Ford, director of transportation and construction services for the city of New Braunfels, said. He said the funds would help to improve the city’s transportation network.

“With AAMPO’s continued partnership and support from TxDOT, we’re able to address rising construction costs while keeping critical roadway, bicycle and pedestrian projects moving forward,” Ford said in the release.

What’s next

New Braunfels will work with AAMPO and TxDOT to move the projects into the construction phase, which is expected to take place between FY 2026 and 2032, according to the release.
