The New Braunfels City Council approved Comal County's request to disannex approximately 3 acres of land along Altgelt Lane.

This decision, presented by Comal County Engineer Robert Boyd at an Oct. 28 council meeting, facilitates a road project that includes the realignment of the roadway and the construction of a new bridge over Dry Comal Creek, allowing the county to manage and maintain the infrastructure outside the city limits.

The details

The land was annexed into the City of New Braunfels in 1974, said Christopher Looney, director of planning and development services for the city.

Comal County recently purchased the property from a private owner to support the upcoming infrastructure improvements.

"The disannexation will allow us to move forward with the road and bridge project, which is critical for managing the heavy truck traffic in the area," Boyd said.

According to Boyd, the project will:
  • Realign a portion of Altgelt Lane.
  • Construct a new bridge over Dry Comal Creek to accommodate increasing traffic demands and ensure safer passage for vehicles.
Zooming in

The proposed disannexation aligns with the city’s strategic plan to enhance connectivity by collaborating with regional partners to improve transportation access, according to agenda documents.
  • Regional Cooperation: Promoting partnerships that benefit transportation infrastructure.
  • Fiscal Responsibility: Ensuring that policy decisions do not create undue financial burdens on the city.
By relocating the road and bridge project outside the city limits, the county will assume responsibility for the long-term maintenance of these infrastructures, eliminating any potential financial burden on the city, Boyd said.

According to the agenda documents, the disannexation would not affect the city’s finances because Comal County does not pay city land taxes. Once finalized, the 3 acres will be right-of-way owned and maintained by Comal County.
