In a nutshell
The change was recommended to the board based on current and projected enrollment trends.
Over the past two years, the district has taken multiple steps to optimize space at Johnson Ranch while prioritizing moving as few students as possible. For example, the district relocated its Spanish immersion program to Rahe Bulverde Elementary. Two sections of early childhood special education were also moved to Bill Brown Elementary, said Krista Moffatt, assistant superintendent of teaching, learning & leadership.
But despite these efforts, mid-year enrollment projections exceeded expectations by over 150 students, which reinforced the need for adjusting attendance boundaries, Moffatt said.
Approximately 220 students will be transferred from Johnson Ranch Elementary to Indian Springs Elementary, according to agenda documents.
Why now?
Johnson Ranch Elementary serves about 1,221 students and exceeds its classroom capacity of 854 students, according to agenda documents.
"With 16 portable classrooms already in place and no room for additional portables, adjustments are necessary. Meanwhile, Indian Springs has available capacity and no projected growth, making this shift a logical step to address overcrowding and balance enrollment," Moffatt said.
What else?
Moffatt said they carefully reviewed multiple factors in developing this recommendation, including:
- Traffic patterns
- Program placement
- Enrollment projects by grade level
- Student transfers
- Anticipated future growth
- Transportation impacts
