When previous owners Jimmy and Annette White decided it was time to retire, they didn’t want to end what they started in 2021. They sold their business to trusted neighbors at Sal-O-Mon Family Restaurant.

Now under new ownership, the Gomez family intends to keep Jimmy and Annette’s recipes alive with kitchen creations that cross borders.

The background

Angel Gomez and his dad Oscar Gomez bought Above Ground Pizza in March. Angel has been helping his dad run their family business since he was 19. His dad’s hard work and consistency inspired him to take full responsibility for Above Ground Pizza.

“We genuinely, really care about our cooking. My dad always tells me, ‘The most important thing is consistency.’ I think that’s why the previous owners trusted us to keep this place running.”

On the menu

The menu at Above Ground Pizza offers 13 pies but also offers pizza customizations, subs, salads and craft beer from New Braunfels Brewing Co. Popular pizzas at the restaurant include Codie’s Primal Pie, featuring meat and pepper toppings with a five-cheese blend. Other creations include the mac & cheese pie, which includes bacon and hamburger meat.

Moving forward

Angel plans on creating more Italian-Mexican fusion dishes, but for now has added a carnitas hoagie on the menu. Above Ground Pizza features a wood-burning oven and pizza dough that incorporates a sourdough starter.

“We call it “the mother,’ says Gomez. It’s the same sourdough starter used by the previous owners and it’s pretty fascinating.”

While running his own business can be challenging at times, he divides his day helping his dad next door. A stickler for perfection like his dad, Gomez hopes to bring that same expectation to his own restaurant.
