New playscape coming soon for Settlement Park in Round Rock

Round Rock City Council approved a contract Feb. 8 with Whirlix Design Inc. for the purchase and installation of new playground equipment at Settlement Park in the Garden Villas at Curry Loop neighborhood.

What's happening?

As part of the city's Playground Replacement Program, the Round Rock Parks and Recreation Department is responsible for maintaining playscapes across the city and replacing equipment at the end of its lifecycle, Parks and Recreation Director Rick Atkins said.

“We do an assessment every 10 years to make sure that we have safe equipment out there for our public to utilize and use. [Settlement Park’s] lifecycle has now come to a point where we need to replace it,” Atkins said.

Construction is expected to begin in May and will last roughly two months. The new playscape will feature:

• Two play structures, one for young children and another for older children
• One large, circular swing that accommodates multiple children at one time
• Climbing opportunities
• Swivel chairs
• Slides

The Settlement Park renovations will cost $180,000 and is funded by the city’s Community Development Block Grant Program.

The CDBG program is federal funding received by the city for the purpose of improving the quality of life for Round Rock residents.
