Richardson City Council selected Daniel Burdette as the lone finalist to fill the vacant Place 3 council seat.
Council conducted final interviews with three candidates at the Sept. 21 meeting before selecting Burdette, who will be officially sworn in on Sept. 28.
The overview
Burdette replaces council member Dan Barrios, who announced his resignation on July 13 to focus on his campaign for U.S. Congress.
Burdette will serve out the remainder of Barrios’ council term, which will end May 1, 2027. The Place 3 seat will be up for election in May.
This was the last council meeting for Barrios, who did not participate in the final deliberation or vote for his replacement.
Jordan Noret and Jeffrey Davis were also interviewed as finalists for the seat.
A closer look
Burdette has been a resident of Richardson for 25 years and has held volunteer and leadership roles in the Wildflower Arts and Music Festival, served on the Richardson Parks and Recreation Commission and participated in Richardson CARES and Leadership Richardson. He is currently vice president of product development for software company MyDirectives.
“If you’re looking for someone who knows and has a rapport with many of the city leaders and is ready to govern on day one, I feel I am prepared for and excited about that opportunity,” Burdette said to council.
Some context
Richardson’s city charter states that a single vacancy on the council must be filled by appointment, decided by a majority vote by the remaining members of council.
Applications for the seat were open from July 22 to Aug. 7, and according to city documents, council received 13 total applications. Council selected eight candidates to move forward to initial interviews and three candidates for final interviews, all of which were conducted in open session.
The new council member had to be a qualified voter, a resident of Richardson for at least one year prior to the appointment and at least 21 years old. The Place 3 council member also represents Richardson’s District 3, which spans most of the west side of the city, and must reside in that district.
