Employees at Friendswood ISD will receive a $50 monthly increase in health insurance contributions from the district starting in fiscal year 2026-27, following board approval at its June 8 meeting.
What’s new
For the 2026-2027 plan year, the monthly premium for the lowest-cost TRS-ActiveCare employee-only plan will increase to $569 per month.
Trustees approved increasing the district’s monthly contribution toward employee health insurance premiums from $295 to $345, representing a $50 monthly increase, according to budget documents.
The change provides about $600 more per employee per year in benefits and raises the district’s annual contribution to nearly $1.18 million, plus the state’s roughly $360,000 contribution, documents show.
How we got here
Trustees reviewed two options for monthly increases in contributions from the district at the meeting, including:
- Option 1: $25 increase in contributions, $300 annual employee benefit increase
- Option 2: $50 increase in contributions, $600 annual employee benefit increase
Option 2 would require an additional $120,000 in funding, while Option 1 is assumed to be covered within the proposed budget, documents show.
Board President Tony Hopkins said at the meeting that he supports the $50 increase in district contributions because it helps offset rising TRS-ActiveCare costs for employees.
What’s next
The change would affect around 400 employees, though the final count will depend on open enrollment from July through August, said Lindsey Foley, FISD executive director of human resources.
