Check out six ongoing transportation project updates across the Austin metro that could impact your commute.
Project: The road will be extended from Edward Burleson Lane south to an intersection with roundabout options at Old Austin Highway in Bastrop.
Update: Construction began May 25, according to city records.
Project: The city is reconstructing Chisholm Trail Road from Sam Bass Road to RM 620 in Round Rock, with drainage, pedestrian and lighting improvements.
Update: The discovery of utility lines within the project have delayed its completion from summer 2026 to fall, per city officials.
Project: Traffic changes are underway as the city of Cedar Park expands New Hope Drive from four to six lanes and introduces an innovative intersection at 183A Toll.
Update: Construction is active between Block House Drive and CR 180, with a traffic shift involving the left-turn lanes from 183A onto New Hope Drive. Design work continues on the western segment toward Lakeline Boulevard, per city officials.
Project: The 7-mile stretch of highway has been undergoing a $677 million facelift since 2021. The Texas Department of Transportation is currently reconstructing Hwy. 290 in Oak Hill, transforming the existing four-lane, undivided roadway to a six-lane divided highway with new frontage roads and 14 miles of shared-use paths, according to TxDOT documents.
Update: The Hwy. 290 and SH 71 flyovers opened in May. TxDOT is still working to complete the project.
Project:
This work will upgrade Rockride Lane in Georgetown to a two-lane collector roadway with a continuous center left-turn lane and a 10-foot-wide shared-use path along one side from SE Inner Loop to Sam Houston Avenue.Update: As of February, the contractor had completed work on the west side of the road and began working on the east side. The city expects substantial construction to be complete by the end of September.
Project: The William Cannon Bridge over I-35 will be blocked off with lane reductions on the main lanes and frontage roads in both directions for the second weekend in a row as part of the I-35 Capital Express South Project. Once completed, the project will feature two high-occupancy-vehicle lanes, a southbound bypass lane and pedestrian and bicycle paths.
Update: The bridge will be blocked off from June 19 at 10 p.m. through June 22 at 5 a.m. for construction crews to set beams for the elevated lanes. Drivers traveling eastbound on William Cannon Drive will turn right on the I-35 frontage road to access southbound I-35 or use the U-turn at Slaughter Lane to head north, according to a news release from TxDOT. Drivers traveling westbound will turn right on the I-35 frontage road to access northbound I-35 or use the U-turn at Stassney Lane to head south.
