Eight Austin ISD schools in North Austin now offer some type of dual-language program. Dual language develop bilingualism and biliteracy using curriculum that emphasizes two languages, according to AISD. In North Austin the district offers two types of dual-language programs—one-way dual language, for native Spanish speakers to learn English, and two-way dual language, for English and Spanish or Vietnamese speakers to learn each other’s languages. Claudia Santamaria, assistant director of AISD’s multilingual team, said dual language is only available at campuses where there is a demographic need.
